  • Creatine is a Steroid: All we can do is laugh at this common myth. Anything that leads to muscle growth, especially as the supplement industry began to gain traction, was equated to steroids or other growth hormones. Because it is an amino acid, creatine is not a steroid. Steroids are used to block cortisol hormones in the body and prevent the breakdown of muscle fibers, which makes muscle recovery happen even faster. Creatine is related neither in its chemical structure or its functions to steroids, and is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. These things together make it impossible for creatine to be a steroid.
  • Creatine’s byproduct, creatinine, is toxic: Creatinine is the byproduct of creatine, created as a result of normal muscle usage and function. For those who are physically active, the more muscular energy they use, the more creatinine is produced. It is also associated with normal kidney function in men and women. Many people used to believe that a measurement of creatinine not sitting around 0.5-1.2 milligrams/deciliters meant the creatine in the body caused kidney issues. In fact, when the readings show numbers outside of this range, it means the kidneys do not function properly, causing higher levels of creatinine to build up in the body. So, when you have a buildup of creatinine in your body, it’s actually helpful in identifying potential issues with your kidneys. Hooray for creatine!

As you can see, creatine is not a harmful chemical, nor will it appear as a steroid in your system during blood or drug tests. It does, however, help you recover and build muscle while harnessing a natural substance, and could even help you and your doctor identify problems with your kidneys.
